Malaysia Airlines, also known as Malaysian Airlines System in some parts of the world was reportedly cyber attacked by hackers during the period of March 2010 to July 2019. However, the data security incident is said to have taken place at the server farm of a third party IT service provider and so the airliner cannot be blamed directly on this note.
Cybersecurity Insiders has learnt that all Enrich Frequent Flyer Members, a rewarding program only offered to frequent flyers, were affected in the incident as their data such as names, date of births, gender and contact details were stolen by the threat actors.
The law enforcement has already started a probe on the incident, and the airliner has advised all its Enrich members to change their account passwords as a precautionary measure.
No IT Infrastructure was impacted in the incident and the airliner headquartered in Kuala Lumpur has reiterated that no personal data of its users was misused online till date.
In January this year, Telecom Giant SingTel from Singapore made it official that hackers infiltrated its servers through a vulnerability in the file sharing software of Accellion.
Note- Accellion stated its product was subjected to an SQL Injection Vulnerability Security Incident and it might have impacted over 1300 of its customers out of an overall count of 3000. And the list includes an Australian law firm named Allens and the Washington State Auditor office, Bombardier, Jones Day, Cynosure retail brand based in Europe, Kroger, and Steris.
