No more Password based logins for Microsoft users

Microsoft is ready to offer a password less login to its users who opt to use their fingerprint or other authentication based software or hardware to have a secure login support.

In March this year, the feature was introduced to business users by the Satya Nadella led company and will be offered to all in the coming weeks.

Since users are showing no seriousness in crafting and while using passwords, Microsoft has taken a decision to go passwordless and offer an alternative login method for users to protect their privacy/s.

Security professionals have touted this move as a ‘bold’ decision taken by the Redmond giant. And support the decision of using the authentication app on their phones that provides a secure login.

What bad about this move is that the passwordless feature of using an app or device for authentication will not anymore work on older devices and platforms such as Xbox 360 consoles, MS office 2010 and Windows 8.1 or the previous versions such as Windows 8 and Windows 7.

“For most of them, passwords can be easily stolen or guesses and are hard to remember. Thus, by using the Microsoft Authenticator App, all their online logins can be prefixed to a single device leading to quick on-screen prompts and notifications that can be approved or denied,” said Vasu Jakkal, the Vice President of Security, Microsoft.

Already, the same feature was introduced by Amazon in last November where an online service user of Amazon should click on an app or message oriented link to approve an authentication.

Note- Microsoft password-less services will be offered to those who opt for either a Facial recognition based authentication, a hardware based security key authentication, or by clicking on SMS or email codes.
