Facebook files lawsuit against Phishing Attack

Meta, the Facebook’s parent company, has filed a lawsuit in a Californian court against some hackers who created over 39,000 fake Facebook(FB) pages as a part of a sophisticated phishing campaign.

The plan was to create impersonating pages and lure FB users into submitting their login credentials that can later be used for issues such as misinformation spread, malware distribution through malicious links and such.

Interestingly, the cyber criminals involved in such campaign not only created fake FB pages but also tried to impersonate its other subsidiaries like Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.

Jessica Romero, the Enforcement and Litigation Director of Meta, stated that the case seems to be complicated as all the guilty were found obscuring their activities with sophisticated IT tools and infrastructure. And this made them hide their activities from the past 2-3 years as tracking down the ISPs, user IP addresses and their phishing websites proved tiresome to the law enforcement.

Ms. Romero also added that there could be a possibility that some of the hacker/s might be involved with some state intelligence. However, she failed to reiterate it as a fact, as the investigation was underway.

“Meta will never tolerate any kind of attacks on its brands and will take stringent action against those found guilty”, said Jessica.

More details will be revealed as the case unfolds more in the Californian Court.

Note- In the year 2019, the Mark Zuckerberg’s company launched a lawsuit against NSO Group that developed a spying software tool named Pegasus targeting around 1000 WhatsApp users including Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, Financial Times Editor Roula Khalaf, Indian Congress politician Rahul Gandhi, Saudi women human rights activists Loujain al-Hathloul, Saudi Princess Latifa and Haya Bint Al-Hussein.
