Cyber threat to Electric Vehicles

A recent online survey conducted for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) suggests that over 74% of prospective owners of Electric Vehicles(EVs) are in a fear that their vehicles might fall prey to ransomware, state funded campaigns and other variants of cyber attack when connected to public charging stations.

Zogby Analytics was the firm that conducted the survey for HSB and came to the above stated conclusion, after taking the opinion of over 1000 respondents working for healthcare, retail, finance and construction sectors.

Researchers from Zogby found that the concern was not only for the EVs but also spread into the minds of those intending to own autonomous vehicles aka self driving cars & trucks connected to internet.

“As the technology is growing, concerns related to cybersecurity are also growing exponentially”, said Timothy Zeilman, the VP of HSB.

Actually, a lot depends on the person who is using the tech and entirely depends on the mind-set of that particular individual or group added Mr. Zeilman.

It is a known fact that the availability of fossil fuels will decrease by 70% by 2030 and so vehicle owners are rushing to switch to transport modes like electric cars and trucks.

However, vehicle manufactures are busy in building Evs with utmost performance, without concentrating much on the security factor. And this is where they need to improve in order to attract more customers for future sales.

Imagine, what if a country plans to wage a war, where it uses hybrid warfare such as cyber attacks and biological weapons, instead of arms & ammunition?

What if it designates a team of dedicated hackers who start taking control of critical infrastructure and autonomous cars remotely?
