The popular video-sharing service just updated its privacy policy, and for European users one fact is clear, their data can be accessed by some employees from across the world.

Where Is The Data Stored and Who Can Access It?

The platform, owned by ByteDance, said the adjustment is a part of its ongoing data governance efforts to restrict employee access to users in the region, reduce data transfers outside of it, and keep the information locally. The platform currently stores European user data in the U.S. and Singapore.

Based on a demonstrated need to do their job, subject to a series of robust security controls and approval protocols, and by way of methods that are recognised under the GDPR, we allow certain employees within our corporate group located in Brazil, Canada, China, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States remote access to TikTok European user data.

The company also declared that they have implemented a tight security system consisting of system access controls, encryption, and network security, to ensure that the users’ data is safe.

How TikTok Collects Information on Location

In the Privacy Policy, TikTok also provides information about the different ways that information on the location of European users may be collected. Users can choose to manually add a location to their videos, or they can choose to turn on Location Services for TikTok from the settings of their devices to allow the app to collect location information.

The company made it clear that they do not collect precise location information, whether it be based on GPS technology or otherwise, from their users in Europe.

The development also occurs as regulatory scrutiny of the network, which has over a billion monthly active users, is intensifying on both sides of the Atlantic. ByteDance has consistently denied that the Chinese government has any control over company.
