Fauda: When Hollywood and Cybersecurity Meet
In the newest season of Fauda on Netflix (season 4), we see the main character (Doron, played by Lior Raz) feeling a combination of guilt from the death of his teammate in the last season plus anger and frustration for being dismissed from his unit. To try and lift his spirits, his captain (Gabi Ayub, played by Itzik Cohen) enlists him for a light security mission in Brussels. Things quickly go awry and Doron finds himself face to face with a sophisticated terror cell, taking the team on a wildly dangerous mission from Brussels to Lebanon.
Ok so no more spoilers. If you haven’t yet watched season 4, episode 4 yet, maybe come back to this post later.
Let’s take a look at the following scene from season 4, episode 4 of Fauda:
In the scene , we see the team discussing Gabi’s possible assassination or kidnapping, which could leave the organization vulnerable. He could have been tortured to the point of giving up sensitive information or passwords and then either assassinated or left until they could get more information from him as needed. We see the team discuss all the evidence at hand, and at the end, they consult their Ermetic dashboards and confirm that there has not been a cloud breach. For now.
So how realistic is this scenario?
Governments have protocols for protecting sensitive information on every level – from screening employees and granting security clearance at different levels to creating emergency plans in the case of the kidnapping or death of someone who knows passwords or other sensitive information.
In fact, the “identities” that army and other government bodies must constantly protect are their actual people in the same way that they, as well as other ordinary businesses and organizations protect human and machine identities in the cloud. In both scenarios, achieving and maintaining least privilege access is critical.
Had Gabi’s password been compromised or if he (or someone posing as him) had logged in from an unusual location, a good security solution would have flagged the activity as suspicious. It would have caught any unauthorized or anomalous activity and sent notifications.
So…was Gabi kidnapped? Assassinated? Is he a double agent?
You’ll have to watch Fauda, season 4 to find out…and catch out the other Ermetic references in episodes 2 and 7.
