Lyca Mobile has released a statement about an unexpected disruption on its network caused by a cyberattack that may have also compromised customer data.

The British company provides voice IP (VoIP) and mobile telecommunications services in 60 nations, including the US, UK, Germany, Australia, France, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Details About the Attack

The attack occurred over the weekend and caused service provision interruptions in almost all countries the telecommunication company operates in. Customers and retailers reported to Lyca that they were unable to access the company’s top-up portal.

According to the company’s press release, phone services on a national and international level have also been impacted. In response to the situation, and to determine the impact on customer data, Lyca Mobile says it launched an urgent investigation that involves external IT experts, law enforcement, and data protection authorities.

Our number one priority is ensuring the safety and security of our customers’ data, and we are urgently investigating whether any personal information may have been compromised as part of this attack… We are confident that all our records are fully encrypted, and we will keep customers updated on the outcome of our investigation as we work with our expert partners to establish the facts.

The business’s response about encrypted consumer data suggests that it has confirmed or has reason to believe that unauthorized access to its systems has occurred. The statement does not, however, specify the kind of encryption that is employed to safeguard consumer data.

As reported by BleepingComputer, restoration operations are in progress with regard to the services offered by Lyca Mobile. However, several of the impacted markets continue to lack access to some operational services.
