Now that's a headline you don't see everyday.

But with a $2.6 billion lawsuit leveled against tech giant Apple, Roberto Escobar doesn't seem like he's joking.

Roberto Escobar sues Apple for FaceTime security

It's safe to say, when you're Pablo Escobar's brother, you care about your personal security.

And that's ultimately why the brother of the infamous drug trafficker says he elected to purchase an iPhone X in 2018, according to Naked Security:

"Escobar claims he purchased the X after he had a phone call with an Apple support employee who assured him that the device was 'the most secure on the market' and 'will never be' vulnerable to any exploits in the future."

But according to him, Apple failed to deliver on that promise.

"Escobar claims that in spite of Apple's assurances about the security of the X, he received strange FaceTime calls. In fact, in January 2019, Apple scrambled to fix an eavesdropping FaceTime bug that enabled snoopers to see their targets' video feeds, to hear what they were saying, and even to hear what other people in the room were saying.

Escobar claims that the bug led to his receiving a life-threatening letter in January 2019. He says he was forced to go into hiding."

What is Escobar suing Apple for?

$2.6 billion dollars is a hefty total for a lawsuit. How does it break down? The lawsuit has three main causes of action:

  1. Breach of Contract – $100 million
  2. Negligence/Negligence Misrepresentation – $500 million
  3. Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress – $2 billion

A price like that is so high that many question whether Escobar's case will even go to trial, much less win against Apple.

What do you think about his chances?
